What is a chai latte?
A chai latte is a Western coffee-shop drink: spiced black tea concentrate mixed with steamed milk. Here's how it differs from authentic Indian masala chai.
A chai latte is a coffee-shop interpretation of Indian masala chai: a sweetened, spiced black tea concentrate combined with steamed milk and topped with foam. It was popularized in North American cafes in the 1990s and has very little in common with how chai is actually drunk in India.
What's in a chai latte
The standard cafe chai latte has three components:
- Chai concentrate — pre-made syrup of black tea, spices (cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, black pepper), sugar, and sometimes vanilla. Brands like Tazo, Oregon Chai, and Starbucks Classic Chai are concentrate-based.
- Steamed milk — whole, oat, or almond, frothed to a microfoam.
- Concentrate-to-milk ratio: typically 1:1 or 1:2.
The drink is poured concentrate-first, then milk, with the foam settling on top. No additional spices, no fresh ginger, no separate brewing.
How a chai latte differs from masala chai
| Property | Chai latte (cafe) | Masala chai (traditional) |
|---|---|---|
| Tea | Concentrate (pre-extracted) | Loose-leaf Assam, freshly brewed |
| Spices | Pre-ground, in concentrate | Whole, bloomed in water |
| Milk | Steamed and added | Boiled with the tea |
| Sugar | Pre-sweetened concentrate (high) | Added at end, to taste (low) |
| Prep time | 30 seconds | 10–15 minutes |
| Sugar (12oz) | ~32g (Starbucks Tall, 2% milk) | Added to taste — typically a spoonful or less, far below the cafe concentrate |
| Caffeine | ~70mg (12oz) to ~95mg (16oz) | ~40–70mg, in the same range as black tea generally |
Two big practical takeaways: cafe chai lattes are much sweeter than traditional masala chai — the concentrate is pre-sweetened to syrup level, while a home-brewed cup gets sugar added to taste, usually far less — and they have different flavor balance because pre-ground spices in syrup taste flatter than fresh-bloomed whole spices in milk.
What's a dirty chai?
A chai latte with a shot of espresso added. Adds a shot's worth of caffeine (60–80mg) on top of the chai latte's own (roughly 70–95mg depending on size) — commonly landing around 130–175mg total — and gives a coffee-forward edge to the spice. Common variants:
- Dirty chai: single shot espresso + chai latte
- Filthy chai: double shot espresso + chai latte
- Clean chai: regular chai latte, no espresso
Dirty chai works because the espresso's bitterness balances the chai concentrate's sweetness. Most coffee shops charge a modest extra amount for the added shot.
How to make a chai latte at home
If you have chai concentrate:
- Heat 6oz of milk to about 65°C / 150°F
- Pour 4oz of concentrate into a 12oz mug
- Top with milk, leaving space for foam
- Optionally dust with cinnamon
If you don't have concentrate but want the flavor faster than full masala chai, see our chai concentrate recipe — makes 2 weeks of concentrate in 30 minutes.
For the real, traditional version with whole spices and the proper milk technique, see our masala chai recipe.
How does a chai latte compare to coffee and masala chai?
Caffeine-wise, a chai latte is comparable to a small coffee. Calorie- and sugar-wise, it's a different story:
- 16oz cafe chai latte: 210–270 calories and roughly 42–43g sugar, per Starbucks' published beverage nutrition data (Grande size; milk choice moves the calories more than the sugar)
- 16oz black coffee: well under 10 calories, effectively no sugar
- 16oz homemade masala chai: no factory syrup setting a floor, so it comes down to how much milk and sugar you use — typically well below the cafe version of both
If you're drawn to chai for the whole spices — cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, cloves — the cafe latte uses the same spice list, just pre-ground and diluted into a sweetened concentrate instead of freshly bloomed in milk. Make the real thing for the fullest spice character — it's not hard.

Frequently asked questions
Is chai latte the same as masala chai?
No. Chai latte is the Westernized cafe version: pre-made syrup + steamed milk. Masala chai is freshly-brewed loose tea + whole spices + milk simmered together. The flavors and ingredient lists barely overlap.
Does chai latte have caffeine?
Yes — roughly 70mg for a 12oz cup, up to about 95mg at 16oz, per Starbucks' published nutrition data (varies by concentrate brand). That's in the same ballpark as a regular coffee. A dirty chai (with an espresso shot) adds another 60–80mg on top, commonly landing around 130–175mg total.
Why is the cafe chai so sweet?
The concentrate is pre-sweetened so it can ship and store as a single bottle. A standard 12oz cafe chai latte has about 32g of sugar, per Starbucks' published nutrition data — close to a soda.
Can I make chai latte without sugar?
Yes, but you can't use most pre-made concentrates because they're sweetened. Make your own unsweetened concentrate, or brew traditional masala chai and skip the sugar. Add a small amount of honey or stevia to taste.
What's the difference between a chai tea latte and a chai latte?
Nothing — they're the same drink. ‘Chai latte’ is technically redundant (chai means tea in Hindi, so ‘chai latte’ literally is ‘tea latte’), but the name stuck.
