Cardamom Latte: How to Make It Hot, Iced, or Caffeine-Free
Share
A cardamom latte is espresso and steamed milk carried by the floral, cooling perfume of real cardamom. Made right, it tastes like the most elegant note in chai — warm and citrus-cool over creamy milk — with none of the syrupy sweetness a coffee shop version usually piles on. You can build it three ways: with whole cardamom pods, with freshly ground cardamom, or with a few drops of extract. Here's all three, in about five minutes.
At a glance
- Time: 5 minutes
- Makes: 1 latte (about 10 oz)
- Cardamom, three ways: 2–3 drops Cardamom & Green Tea Elixir, or ⅛–¼ tsp freshly ground green cardamom, or 3 green pods lightly crushed
Ingredients
- 1–2 shots espresso (or ½ cup strong brewed coffee)
- 6–8 oz milk (dairy, oat, or almond)
- Cardamom: 2–3 drops Cardamom & Green Tea Elixir, or ⅛–¼ tsp freshly ground green cardamom, or 3 crushed green pods
- Optional sweetener: 1–2 tsp date syrup, honey, or maple (it's lovely unsweetened, too)
- Optional: a pinch of cinnamon to finish
How to make a cardamom latte
- Pull the espresso. Brew 1–2 shots (or ½ cup strong coffee) into your cup.
- Warm the milk. Heat 6–8 oz milk to about 150°F — steaming, not boiling. Scalded milk tastes flat.
- Add the cardamom. Easiest: 2–3 drops of the Elixir into the warm milk. Using whole pods? Crush 3 pods, add them to the milk as it heats, let them steep 3–4 minutes, then strain. Using ground? Whisk ⅛–¼ tsp straight in.
- Froth and pour. Froth the milk, then pour it over the espresso. Sweeten to taste and dust with cinnamon.
The 10-second version
If you don't want to grind pods or strain milk, 2–3 drops of the Cardamom & Green Tea Elixir carry the cardamom of about two whole pods — real pressed-pod oils, not synthetic flavoring — plus a whisper of green tea that balances the coffee. Squeeze, drop into the milk, stir. Done.
Variations
- Iced cardamom latte: pull the espresso, stir 2–3 drops of Elixir into cold milk, and pour both over ice.
- Cardamom green tea latte (no coffee): skip the espresso. Whisk 3–4 drops of Elixir into hot milk for a caffeinated-but-coffee-free cup — green tea and cardamom in one. See cardamom and green tea for why the pairing works.
- Caffeine-free cardamom milk: warm milk with ¼ tsp ground cardamom, a pinch of cinnamon and turmeric, no coffee. A golden-milk-style nightcap.
Tips from the tea drawer
- Fresh grind wins. Grind 2–3 green pods just before you brew. Pre-ground cardamom that's been open for months is faint, not mild — see what is cardamom for storage.
- Go easy. About ¼ tsp ground per latte is plenty. Too much cardamom turns soapy.
- Bloom, then strain. Whole pods steeped in the milk for 3–4 minutes give the smoothest infusion — just strain before pouring.
- Don't boil the milk. Around 150°F keeps it naturally sweet; boiling flattens it.
FAQ
How much cardamom goes in a latte? About ⅛–¼ tsp freshly ground, or 3 crushed green pods, or 2–3 drops of cardamom extract per 8 oz of milk. Start low and add more — cardamom is potent.
Is a cardamom latte caffeinated? With espresso, yes. Make it coffee-free with the cardamom green tea latte variation (still has green tea's gentle caffeine) or fully caffeine-free with the cardamom milk version.
What does a cardamom latte taste like? Floral, warm, and slightly citrus-cool over creamy milk — like chai's most elegant note without the full spice mix.
Can I use cardamom extract instead of pods? Yes. A few drops of a whole-pod extract give real cardamom oils without grinding or straining, and dissolve cleanly into hot or cold milk.
